Small fish (1996)

Four fish, handbuilt in stoneware and decorated with engobe, stand upright and facing outward; flat, frontal, unapologetic. Incised lines carve out fins, scales and wide spiral eyes, filled with oxide that settles into deep teal and burnt orange against the raw, sandy clay.

They are ancient and immediate at once. Part totem, part tide chart, part childhood memory of something pulled from the water and held up to the light. Standing together they form a small monument – to the sea, to the creaturely, to the enduring human impulse to make a mark and call it alive.
